UK Art Market Growth Trails Behind Competitors, Report Shows

A recent report reveals that while the UK art market remains a European leader, its growth rate is slower compared to international rivals.

A report published on 28 October 2026 finds that the UK art market’s growth is lagging behind that of its global competitors. Despite this, the UK continues to hold a dominant position in Europe, accounting for over 50% of the continent’s art market share.

According to the report, the UK art market was valued at £8 billion in 2025, making it the second largest in the world by sales value. While London remains a major international hub, 65% of employer-registered art businesses are based outside the capital, highlighting the sector’s national reach.

The report also notes that 89% of UK art businesses reported annual sales below £1 million. This indicates that many small teams may face challenges in meeting regulatory obligations.

The sector supports the livelihoods of an estimated 62,800 visual artists across the country. This underscores the art market’s importance not only for commerce but also for creative professionals.

Overall, the findings provide insight into the structure and challenges of the UK art market, showing its strong European presence, slower growth compared to international competitors, and the predominance of smaller businesses.

Why it matters

Understanding the UK art market’s position and growth challenges is crucial for policymakers and stakeholders aiming to support the sector’s development and the artists it sustains.
